The Scientific Notation Converter is a string-first tool that converts between decimal values and canonical normalized scientific notation without intermediate floating-point rounding.

How to use the converter

  1. Select your conversion mode: Decimal → Scientific or Scientific → Decimal.
  2. Enter your exact string representation (e.g., "12345" or "1.2345e4").
  3. Click "Calculate" to view the converted output.

String-First Precision

Normalization: exactly one non-zero digit appears before the decimal point.

The calculator moves decimal positions using text operations rather than converting the full value to a JavaScript number. This prevents large exact decimal strings such as 12345678901234567890 from being rounded before conversion. It accepts valid scientific syntax including "1.23e4", "1.23E4", "1.23e+4", and "1.23e-4".

Converting a decimal to scientific notation

Decimal value0.00052
Normalizing 0.00052 to place exactly one non-zero digit before the decimal.
Result: 5.2 × 10^-4

Notes

  • For Decimal → Scientific, examples include: 12345 → 1.2345 × 10^4, -6000 → -6 × 10^3, 0 → 0 × 10^0.
  • For Scientific → Decimal, examples include: 1.2345e4 → 12345, 5.2e-4 → 0.00052, -6e3 → -6000.
  • The tool strictly imposes limits of MAX_SCIENTIFIC_DIGITS = 10,000 and MAX_SCIENTIFIC_EXPONENT = 10,000. These limits prevent extremely large input or output strings from consuming excessive browser memory, but are not mathematical limits of scientific notation itself.
  • The calculator preserves exact string relationships within its documented limits.
